Workplace Skills to Win at the Job Game

by Khaled on April 12, 2008

skills in workplaceEveryone recognizes the need to have the proper education and work skills to succeed on the job. However, many people do not realize the importance of other, personal skills in job success.

In fact, in today’s competitive workplace, where it is common for many well-educated adults to vie for the same job, or be considered for promotions on the job, these personal skills become the deciding factor in choosing one person over another.

When we are on-the-job, we bring not only our education and talents, but also our entire ”self” to the workplace. Depending on how we have developed our “self,” we will be more or less prepared to successfully navigate the workplace.

We bring our whole personality to the workplace, as well as our work ethic, communication skills, and many other personal traits.

When managers consider similarly educated and skilled workers for a promotion, it is these personal traits that will come to the fore in the decision. Managers will decide who can better navigate the business, make good judgments, and communicate appropriately with colleagues and other senior staff.

Considering this fact, following are some of the important workplace skills that you can use to win at the job game:

  • Remember always to dress appropriately on the job.

While corporate positions may demand that most employees dress in business suits, other work environments may have a less stringent dress code. Those who want to get ahead should dress more conservatively. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear stylish clothes. You can be stylish, yet conservative. Management will always be better dressed, so if you want to be in management, dress like one.

  • Enhance your communication and negotiation skills.

Communication skills are extremely important in terms of who gets the promotion. Employers will look at who develops effective workplace relationships, both with colleagues and management. They will also look at how effective employees are in getting things done through their communication with others, how they act in meetings, communicate their ideas, and negotiate an issue.

  • Have a good work ethic.

Honesty, integrity, dedication, and accountability are all part of a good work ethic. Especially with recent corporate scandals, managers are particularly keen on examining an employee’s work ethic. If you ultimately want a leadership position, your managers will look at all aspects of your work ethic in their decision to place you in a leadership position.

You need a strategy to win at the “job game.” A large part of this strategy is to develop appropriate workplace behaviors and a solid, “put together” work image for today’s workplace.
