What is The Definition of Success?
Now that’s success 101, right?
Sometimes we need to get back to the basics to make things simple. So, what’s the meaning of success? Here is the dictionary definition of success (according to dictionary.com):
- the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors
- the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
- a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
- a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show
- Obsolete. An outcome.
I noticed something while I’m doing some research on other people’s definitions of success, lots of others LOVE Ralph Waldo Emerson’s definition of success:
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
A healthy child, a garden patch
Or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
Easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Another definition of success by John Wooden in his book “They Call Me Coach”:
Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.
My personal definition of success…
Success is getting specific things done.
Do you think these “specific things” can be the same for everyone? Nope. For some people it’s the first million dollar, for others it’s tonight’s bread and finding a warm place to spend that night. So, I encourage you to know what does success mean to you. Ask yourself this question…
At the end of your life, how can you judge if you succeeded or not? In career, business, personal life, relationships… etc.
That’s it for today. Next time, I’ll go deep in other terms, such as happiness, failure, sadness … and the like. Till then, let me wish you a massive success
Kaled.
