Confronting Life's Most Challenging Changes
The only thing certain in this life is unpredictability. Even the Ancient Greeks said that in this world, “everything flows.”
Everything is uncertain, always in motion, always changing. Anyone determined to row against this current has a poor understanding of the nature of life.
And besides, why fight change?
People tend to forget that changes can be for the better—and in any case, the transitions we endure in life lead to personal growth and mental, physical, and spiritual development.
On the other hand, changes can be overwhelming.
When they come in rapid succession, they can blindside us, and cause us to despair; instead of swimming with the changing current of life, we feel as if we are being swept helplessly along, thrashing our arms and legs, threatened with drowning.
People are most likely to experience this unenviable sensation when they fail to account for change and prepare for it properly. Because change will come. That’s something you can plan on.
So, no need to be a defeatist, or a cynic. Learn to view transition as a personal challenge.
The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote famously that “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger,” meaning that, by simply enduring, and absorbing the blows of fate, we are improving and growing. Keeping this in mind, you can maintain a healthy perspective on the transitions you’re living through, viewing them as opportunities for genuine revolutions in your life.
The following roadmap will assist you as you navigate the uncertain seas of your life:
1. Life’s road is constantly forking
Learn to be flexible, and able to quickly adapt to whatever life throws your way. Realize that there are always new solutions, ones you may not have considered. Your goal may be most effectively reached by an unexpected detour. If you conceive only one plan of attack, and are determined to follow it come hell or high water, you’re flirting with disaster. Good planning involves foreseeing those forks in the road, and being ready to navigate them.
2. You’re not the first
Since the dawn of time, men have struggled with the constant changes of life. So don’t over-dramatize your situation. Yes, it may be serious, but, quite honestly, it’s nothing new. Those around you are undergoing the same challenges in their lives. Why not discuss it with them?
3. Don’t flee change; embrace it
Life’s challenges will make you stronger, if you view them as chances to grow. Sometimes the most unexpected, and therefore most dreaded, transitions can turn out to be life’s greatest blessings. What seems to be a road to nowhere may lead you exactly where you always wanted to be. So don’t rush to judgment, and don’t despair.
4. Get real about change
Simply admitting the fact that you can’t escape change is a huge step in managing it effectively. Denying it, or giving yourself over to useless complaining or self-pity, is hardly constructive. Be realistic about the nature of life—perhaps you’ll even learn to enjoy it. If its plot were too predictable, you’d get bored with it. Learn to enjoy its unexpected twists and turns.
5. Be upbeat
Learn to see the silver lining. In almost any circumstance, those who try can find both positive and negative aspects. There’s no reason to dwell on the things that are unpleasant, when you can keep your hopes up. If changes are mounting, and you’re a bit overwhelmed, take a minute to treat yourself; withdraw from life’s hustle and bustle, enjoy some moments of seclusion and serenity, and reevaluate. Chances are, you’ll see things from an entirely new—and more positive—perspective.
