Did you know that the way you think can make you ill either physically or mentally and in some cases both? The way you think has a major impact on your health.

People who suffer from depression, tend to contract physical illnesses as well and this is because their mind is full of negative emotions. They can suffer from headaches, vomiting or diarrhea and some of the more severe cases also suffer from Agoraphobia.

The idea is to rid your body of all negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. But how can you do that when you feel so ill physically? It’s not an easy thing to do, but you have to re-train your mind to have a more positive slant.

Have you noticed that some days you’ll wake up and you feel as though you should stay in bed? Quite often you will end up either not feeling well or have a bad headache. Your intuition is telling you to stay there.

Re-training your mind requires a bit of effort on your part, so arm yourself with books, CD’s and DVD’s all on self development and immerse yourself in them. Sooner or later you will notice your thought patterns changing and you’ll be able to rid yourself of your negative thoughts.

Knowing how your mental health takes over your physical body will make you aware of the way you think. Try to push all negative thoughts out and replace them with positive ones.

When you’ve lost a loved one from your life, you feel as though you will never recover from the grieving process. Every time you think of that person your eyes well up with tears and your sense of loss feels inconsolable. Allow yourself to grieve and you will find that with the passing of time your grief will lessen. You won’t ever forget that person, but instead of grief you’ll have wonderful memories.

One of the biggest problems most people face when dealing with sorrow, is wondering when the overwhelming sense of grief will subside.

Dealing with sorrow can be a difficult time for you, but don’t complicate it by turning to alcohol or drugs to ease your pain. What happens when the effects wear off? You’re right back where you started.

The real secret to quickly dealing with sorrow is to live your life as you normally would. Go back to work and socialize with your family and friends. If you were playing sport beforehand then start playing again. Keep your life as normal as you can even though you may still experience feelings of grief from time to time. This is perfectly normal.

If you feel that your grieving period is going on far too long, then you might consider going to a grief counselor. These practitioners are trained to deal in that specialty so ask the experts for some help. Don’t try dealing with it on your own because it can lead to depression which will take longer to get over.

There is always help out there for dealing with sorrow. All you have to do is ask for it.

If you have a stressful situation you will notice that the defenses will go up immediately. Being angry is far easier to deal with than working out the problem. To work on anger management here are a few tips.

Talk to a family member or friend who is easy to talk to and also understands. Talking to someone known to you and that you know will listen, will make you feel a lot more comfortable. A family member or friend is likely to know both sides of the story.

Meditation is a great way to calm your whole body and mind and relieve the tension. You have to learn how to release the anger, so calm meditation will put you on the right path.

Take yourself away from the environment which has caused you to feel angry. Being alone with your thoughts may help you to look at your actions and possibly do things differently.

Write down what is making you angry. You may feel as though nobody is listening to you or understands what your problem is. Writing it down is also a great way to release your anger.

There are lots of anger management tips out there to help you overcome your feelings. Try simple things like going for a walk, listen to music or turn the bad situation into a humorous one. Whatever you decide to do will be right. You have to rid yourself of all the negative emotion and begin to think clearly and logically once more.

It’s a stressful world we live in.

There’s no denying it. Studies from across the nation tend to say the same thing:

People are much more stressed now than ever before. Not even children are spared, with increased homework workloads, extracurricular activities and social pressures.

It doesn’t take any stretch of the imagination to know what stress can do to a person. Its negative impact can affect a person emotionally, physically and spiritually.

People are looking for alleviation by reaching out to therapists and doctors for remedies to their stress-induced ailments like depression and migraines. Some even seek religious counsel.

But stress is an everyday occurrence and regardless of what a person may do to try and eradicate it from his life, the demands of our fast-paced and busy lives are not likely to abate. Stress is inevitable.

For that reason, we need to find ways to cope with stress instead of believing that we can get rid of all of it with one fell swoop. We can’t do that. What we can do, however, is implement daily strategies that can help us take pressure off ourselves, enjoy life and stay in touch with the core of who we are.

When you’re confronted with stress, always remember that you have other options than letting it get to you, regardless of what day of the week it is. In theory, Monday is no more important than Tuesday, Tuesday is no more important than Wednesday and so on. If you keep this in the back of your mind and use the following tips to help you cope, you’ll realize that stress is a transitory and easily-manageable phase.

So, what can the average, overburdened person do to help himself deal with stress?

I’ll provide you with seven tips- one for each day of the week.

Reorganize and reprioritize your life. Recognize what’s really important to you and allot the appropriate amount of energy to it. Teach yourself about time management and other personal organization techniques that can help make your life easier and more enjoyable.

Use your body to help ease your mind. Regular exercise, relaxation techniques and healthy eating habits can contribute to reduced stress levels. Listen to your body for rest cues and get enough sleep. Stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Learn to let go. Some things are just simply out of our control, regardless of how much we’d like to change that fact. You don’t have to completely absolve yourself of responsibility. Instead, redistribute responsibility to where it belongs. You wouldn’t blame a crossing guard for a stoplight being out, would you? Like the crossing guard, you’re just in the middle of a stressful scenario, trying to navigate the situation.

Stay positive. A great part of stress is the imagining of worst case scenarios. You’d be surprised how far optimism can take you in life. Plus, if you don’t remain upbeat, there’s always the chance that the pessimism will turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy, which can keep you in the negative cycle of stress.

Distance yourself from people or scenarios that cause you undue stress. Stress is contagious and often has a domino-like effect. One stressful person or situation can lead to many others. And who needs that?

Give yourself a break! Stress can often be traced back to too much pressure we put on ourselves. Set realistic goals for yourself and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how minor.

Ask for help when you need it. Too many of us believe that we’re alone when dealing with stress or that no one could understand our situation. Not true. In addition to health care professionals and support groups, friends, family and even pets can help you reduce stress. All you have to do is reach out.

If you incorporate these tips into your daily life, there’s a good chance you’ll see a significant reduction in your stress levels and start feeling like yourself again. And that’s the first step in reaching your personal life’s potential.

A countless amount of people through many centuries have practiced meditation for peace of mind and health of body. When searching Google, the search engine lists about 55 million results for the word “meditation.”

How can someone like you and me learn about such a useful topic when it is so vast?

There are 206 bones in our bodies along with countless tissues, ligaments, muscles, brain cells, and other parts of the body that many everyday people don’t know about. However, an ordinary person knows enough about his or her body in order to continue to breathe and to walk from here to there.

We know about our bodies because we live in them.

Here is a practical and simple way to learn needed information about meditation by living with it for a couple of months. Many people find that daily meditation (keep in mind its practical) is able to help them stay rested, energized, alert, and calm so that day to day life so be happy and worth living.

Though meditation isn’t your one way ticket to nirvana, nor self-hypnosis, it has proven to be very helpful. However, meditation is much more than reading literature that inspires or talking to yourself.

What exactly is meditation?

Before you start, choose a word of your own. Try to pick a word that has two or three syllables that has no literal meaning to you. It doesn’t even have to be a real word. But make sure that the word you choose is the word you use each time you meditate.

Making up the word on your own is fun. You can easily make a word by combining random index syllables that you’d find in a phone book. For example, words like ohana, renkah, and granal are words that you can use. If you don’t think you can make a word, find a meditation teacher that can help you.

When you have the word you want to say, do these few things:

1. Sit comfortably.

2. Close your eyes.

3. Think of the word to yourself in your mind. Repeat the word. (Make sure you take your time.) Keep repeating the word over and over.

4. You will probably notice that you are thinking about something other than the world. Without getting mad at yourself, begin thinking about your word again.

5. After 20 minutes or so, stop thinking of the word, open your eyes, and congratulate yourself.

Make sure that you do this practice once of twice a day for about 100 days. On day 100, ask yourself how you feel.

Does your mind feel clear? Is your emotional stamina approved? Would you like to continue meditating after these 100 days?

And that’s it!

The rest is nothing but commentary.

Q. What if I experience feelings I normally don’t? – Vivid mental pictures, or moments where my mind seems to be blank?

A. All you can do is let these experiences come and go as they do. They aren’t the object of meditation, just the scenery. Meditate as if you are a mountain.

A mountain wears and reflects all of the ever-changing scenery on its face. This includes the sun, moon, rivers, trees, fields, snow, wind, and so much more. However, the mountain pays no attention to these. It does nothing but sit.

Q. What is I experience uncomfortable or unusual side-effects of after-effects?

A. If you’ve ever learned to play table tennis, or ping pong, you have found that looking at a white ball that bounces back and forth has probably made you a little dizzy, given you a headache, or even given you a mood swing that you naturally wouldn’t have. You would probably want to speak to a doctor or psychologist.

However, this is very unlikely. It is also unlikely that you well experience anything like this because of meditation. If you do, use something called common sense and stop meditating and see what you can do to fix the problem. You can even speak to someone about it if you are worried.

Q. Do I need a special mantra of my own? Does it need to be assigned by an expert?

A. One day in the future, some specialist in behavioral psychology and brain neurology who does studies on meditation might be able to give you a scientific answer. For now, studies say no. You can pick the word you want.

More than 35 years ago, Dr. Herbert Benson described a clinically detectable response that is triggered by meditation practices. In his book, “The Relaxation Response,” Benson recommends that the meditator pick his or her own focus word.

Patricia Carrington, Ph.D., the author of “Freedom in Meditation,” is a psychologist who has taught meditation since the early 1970s in order to study the outcomes of it. She calls it the Clinically Standardized Meditation.

A guru from India who was able to help her with her research was able to show that the choice of a mantra is not crucial to the overall outcome of meditation.

Master Seung Sah, a distinguished Korean American Zen teacher, has founded many Zen centers around the world. He even claimed that something like coca-cola will work as a mantra.

Simply, it’s not the word that you choose, it’s what you do with the word.

Q. How does meditation fit with prayer and religious devotion?

A. Though meditation is not religious in itself, many people have found that it is able to make their mind as well as their emotions much more responsive to things such as religious contemplation and prayer.

If your religious teacher objects meditation, you have to deal with it with common sense. There is definitely no quick answer.

Q. How meditation fit with psychotherapy?

A. Therapists have reported that meditation, and things similar to it have been able to help their patients’ progress in their treatment.

Some psychiatric patients react badly to meditation, just as they would react to different types of therapies –as they react to life. A psychiatric patient should inform his or her therapist before using meditation.

Q. Is it worth the time and discipline to learn a practice like this?

A. Though many have said it, meditation is not a hard practice to do.

Sleeping and eating aren’t hard things to do, though Google will list millions of websites for you to read about food and sleeping. It’s very simple to take a nap and eat an apple.

Meditation is simple too. Go back to the beginning and count. Each session you have to do is just five steps. You don’t have to have a textbook or computer to learn how to meditate.

As Zen says, eat when you’re hungry and drink when you’re thirsty – meditate if it makes you feel good.

All of us have those moments when we want to start throwing things.

Screaming, kicking the walls, overturning tables. But why get hysterical?

It’s perfectly normal to have such feelings of helpless rage from time to time, and respond with panic and anxiety attacks.

If you feel that such outbursts are taking control of your life, it may be time to step back and reevaluate your situation, and your response to stress.

Panic and anxiety outbursts can distort the decision-making process, or preclude it altogether. When your thoughts are swirling, it’s hard to see clearly. You’ll tend to make hasty decisions, to act just for the sake of doing something, instead of taking a much-needed pause to reflect, take a deep breath, and determine your wisest course of action.

There are a few guideposts you can use to help orient yourself when it seems that panic and anxiety have taken control of your mind. These are very practical steps you can take to manage stress constructively:

1. Take a deep breath. If an attack is threatening to break out, nip it in the bud. Sit down, stretch, relax a bit, and most importantly, breathe deeply and slowly. One of the best ways to manage rage and anger is simply to restore a slower rate of breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly, and help lower your heart rate back to a normal level.

2. Purge your bring. Those swirling thoughts in your head can obscure the truth. So maybe it’s a good idea to simply stop thinking for a moment. Purge your mind of those racing thoughts and fears, and reflect quietly for a moment about what you can do yourself to take an active and positive role in the situation.

3. Apply the brakes. Stop racing around. Quell the urge to do something—do anything—just to make yourself feel as if you’re being active. Chances are, if you act on impulse, you’ll just be wasting your energy, and continuing the spiral of frustration. Decelerate, and you’ll enjoy a smoother ride.

4. Stifle the voice of panic. That inner voice that always whispers wild ideas and outlandish fears can cause you to panic. That voice distorts reality, exaggerates, makes mountains out of molehills. View things from a broader perspective. Sure, there are challenges ahead. But they couldn’t possibly be as devastating as that voice suggests.

5. Seek counsel from those you trust. One of the best ways to find a broader, more level-headed perspective on your challenges is to ask for the point of view of a trusted friend or advisor. They’ll often have an eye for certain aspects or possibilities of your situation that you’ve been blinded to, because of your fears and anxiety.

6. Treat yourself. You spiraled a bit out of control, and flew off the handle. Take a time-out to restore your sanity and your serenity. Return to yourself. Find a place of quiet, and retreat there for a while. Remind yourself of who you are and where you’re going.

Nothing constructive is ever brought about by panic and anxiety attacks. But positive steps can be taken to manage these unbridled fears and eruptions of rage, and preserve a place of calm in any storm. Soon you’ll become the lighthouse, instead of the storm-tossed ship.

In our latest article: The Negative Power of Stress… we discussed the effect of stress. Today I want to focus on the solution part; how to reduce the daily stress…

Stress has become a big part of our daily lives. If it’s not stress at work, it’s stress with children, money issues, lack of time and too many obligations.

We all know that this stress is not good for us. In fact, most of us know that stress can make us very ill.

The key to surviving our stressful lives is in knowing how to manage stress – how to find a semblance of peace and content amid the chaos.

Some of the major ways you can reduce stress in your daily life include:

taking time during the day to do something enjoyable for you,

getting plenty of sleep, and

taking some time to exercise each day – even if it’s for 10 minutes.

Taking a “breather” during the workday always helps to clear the mind. If you can, take a brief break from what you are doing, especially if it something particularly challenging, and do something that you enjoy – getting a cup of coffee, or taking a quick stroll outside.

Adequate sleep is a good way to recharge your batteries and let your body get the rest it needs to face the next day. If you’re working on only 5 hours of sleep, you are more vulnerable to the negative effects of stress.

Getting plenty of rest also boosts your immune system and will help you fight illness.

Exercise is a known stress reducer in that you are expending energy, and letting your body release “feel good” hormones. Of course, always check with your doctor before you begin any type of exercise program.

The American Heart Association, on its website, www.americanheart.org. lists 12 specific stress reducers.

These recommendations have to do with taking charge of your life in how you react to negative situations, not accepting more than you can handle, looking at the good, rather than the bad in a situation, not resorting to alcohol or drugs to obtain a relief from stress, and doing things like joining a stress support group.

Many times we make our own stress when we react to situations with a negative attitude, or when we take on things we know will just add to our already overextended schedule.

A good practice would be to STOP AND THINK before we decide to take on new responsibilities outside of work.
