And why should you? Dealing with grief is a hard thing to do, and may take quite some time for you to feel as though you're normal again. Trying to stay positive, especially if you have children, is not easy to do. Putting on a brave face in front of them is not really how you feel, so you must start taking steps to help you overcome the grief and feel positive once again.

You’ve probably asked yourself many times why you should stay positive after the death of a loved one.

The top 2 ways you can stay positive during this time are:

You have to stop the negative chattering your head which is constantly telling you how terrible you feel. Replacing the chatter with some positive thoughts can be as easy as listening to a CD throughout your day which will have an immediate effect of making you feel uplifted. If you don’t have time to listen to CD’s then spend your spare time reading self-help books from people who can offer you some wonderful words of wisdom that you can use to help get you get back on track.

Try taking up some form of exercise, whether it's going for a daily walk or going to a gym and doing an exercise program. Exercise is a wonderful way to help clear your mind as you concentrate on your program, and nothing else. If you live near a beach there’s nothing more uplifting than going for a walk, hearing nothing but the sound of the waves crashing. It’s a great way to clear your mind.

Grief is not easy to deal with and it will pass with time, but to help you along the way you have to take some form of action. If you do nothing, the grief will stay with you far longer than it should. Start helping yourself and within a short period of time your grief will be gone and you will be able to get on with your life once again.

Have you ever suffered from anxiety or panic attacks? If you have, then you will understand the absolute fear that goes through your body and you feel as though you're going to die. Anxiety and depression often go together, so it is very difficult to cope with.

Many people suffer from anxiety and depression because of a traumatic event which has happened in their life, and it can show up in a number of different ways. Some people have a fear of heights so that when they are put into the situation of being high up in a building, for example, they feel their heart beating rapidly, they become very sweaty and agitated and the feeling of fear is absolutely unbearable.

There are a number of ways to overcome your fears and anxiety, and one of those ways is through the use of listening to CD's, which will work on your subconscious mind and make you feel totally relaxed. One such CD is called "Dissolving Panic & Anxiety Now!" People who suffer from anxiety or panic attacks have negative chatter going through their mind. So the purpose of listening to CDs is to retrain your thoughts. You can banish the negativity forever.

All it takes is listening to a CD for a couple of minutes each day and you will notice that your thought patterns will change over time. You will no longer be fearful of the problem, which is affecting your life so dramatically.

Your anxiety and depression will not go away on its own, so it's up to you to get yourself back to a healthy state of mind and body, so get your copy of "Dissolving Panic & Anxiety Now!" and once again take control of your life.

When you’ve lost a loved one from your life, you feel as though you will never recover from the grieving process. Every time you think of that person your eyes well up with tears and your sense of loss feels inconsolable. Allow yourself to grieve and you will find that with the passing of time your grief will lessen. You won’t ever forget that person, but instead of grief you’ll have wonderful memories.

One of the biggest problems most people face when dealing with sorrow, is wondering when the overwhelming sense of grief will subside.

Dealing with sorrow can be a difficult time for you, but don’t complicate it by turning to alcohol or drugs to ease your pain. What happens when the effects wear off? You’re right back where you started.

The real secret to quickly dealing with sorrow is to live your life as you normally would. Go back to work and socialize with your family and friends. If you were playing sport beforehand then start playing again. Keep your life as normal as you can even though you may still experience feelings of grief from time to time. This is perfectly normal.

If you feel that your grieving period is going on far too long, then you might consider going to a grief counselor. These practitioners are trained to deal in that specialty so ask the experts for some help. Don’t try dealing with it on your own because it can lead to depression which will take longer to get over.

There is always help out there for dealing with sorrow. All you have to do is ask for it.

All of us have those moments when we want to start throwing things.

Screaming, kicking the walls, overturning tables. But why get hysterical?

It’s perfectly normal to have such feelings of helpless rage from time to time, and respond with panic and anxiety attacks.

If you feel that such outbursts are taking control of your life, it may be time to step back and reevaluate your situation, and your response to stress.

Panic and anxiety outbursts can distort the decision-making process, or preclude it altogether. When your thoughts are swirling, it’s hard to see clearly. You’ll tend to make hasty decisions, to act just for the sake of doing something, instead of taking a much-needed pause to reflect, take a deep breath, and determine your wisest course of action.

There are a few guideposts you can use to help orient yourself when it seems that panic and anxiety have taken control of your mind. These are very practical steps you can take to manage stress constructively:

1. Take a deep breath. If an attack is threatening to break out, nip it in the bud. Sit down, stretch, relax a bit, and most importantly, breathe deeply and slowly. One of the best ways to manage rage and anger is simply to restore a slower rate of breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly, and help lower your heart rate back to a normal level.

2. Purge your bring. Those swirling thoughts in your head can obscure the truth. So maybe it’s a good idea to simply stop thinking for a moment. Purge your mind of those racing thoughts and fears, and reflect quietly for a moment about what you can do yourself to take an active and positive role in the situation.

3. Apply the brakes. Stop racing around. Quell the urge to do something—do anything—just to make yourself feel as if you’re being active. Chances are, if you act on impulse, you’ll just be wasting your energy, and continuing the spiral of frustration. Decelerate, and you’ll enjoy a smoother ride.

4. Stifle the voice of panic. That inner voice that always whispers wild ideas and outlandish fears can cause you to panic. That voice distorts reality, exaggerates, makes mountains out of molehills. View things from a broader perspective. Sure, there are challenges ahead. But they couldn’t possibly be as devastating as that voice suggests.

5. Seek counsel from those you trust. One of the best ways to find a broader, more level-headed perspective on your challenges is to ask for the point of view of a trusted friend or advisor. They’ll often have an eye for certain aspects or possibilities of your situation that you’ve been blinded to, because of your fears and anxiety.

6. Treat yourself. You spiraled a bit out of control, and flew off the handle. Take a time-out to restore your sanity and your serenity. Return to yourself. Find a place of quiet, and retreat there for a while. Remind yourself of who you are and where you’re going.

Nothing constructive is ever brought about by panic and anxiety attacks. But positive steps can be taken to manage these unbridled fears and eruptions of rage, and preserve a place of calm in any storm. Soon you’ll become the lighthouse, instead of the storm-tossed ship.

With a recognized epidemic of depression, and the advertising of all sorts of antidepressant drugs, we may well ask if drugs are the only way to treat depression.

After all, there have been well-documented cases of antidepressant drugs actually increasing the risk of suicidal thoughts and acts, particularly in young adults.

However, it is important to recognize that serious clinical depression, with a known chemical cause, must be treated appropriately with medication.

For those with milder bouts of depression – perhaps feeling “blue” more often than not, or for those who want to prevent depression, there may be some other ways to deal with this illness…

First of all, there is psychotherapy that should be an adjunct to drugs in cases of depression. Some types of depression may not have a chemical cause, but instead be driven by life experiences – a dysfunctional home life, loss of a loved one, etc. In these cases, counseling is very important.

In addition to counseling, there are other treatments that are being encouraged to fight depression. One major school of thought is nutritional balance and the use of herbs. Both body and mind need to be nourished appropriately to be in balance. It is believed that “food stress” or the ingestion of foods that are bad for you – too much sugar, calories, etc. put stress on bodily functions, so that your body and your mind cannot operate as efficiently as it should. (Source: www.emaxhealth.com).In addition, herbs, such as St. John’s Wort have been touted to be almost as effective as some anti-depressant drugs.

Another school of thought is that doctors today are treating many maladies and feelings of sadness as “depression”, when in fact these feelings are a natural part of our existence.

Life is not a bowl of cherries, after all. We all have to go through bad times, sad times and everything in between.

An article by the University of Otago, ChristChurch, questions the “epidemic of depression” theory, stating that, in fact, what we’re seeing is that doctors are just treating people with the “blues” with available medications so that they will feel better.

These doctors may not be taking into account what is really behind the “depression”, or if it is, in fact, truly clinical depression.

It is clear that depression needs to be treated according to its origin and severity. There are some cases that are so mild that an exercise program, good nutrition, change of scenery, etc. might just be enough to help an individual.

On the other hand, serious clinical depression may respond only to a combination of medication, counseling and other support.

It seems that many people today are depressed. Friends talk about feeling “blue” or are on medications for depression. Commercials abound with medications to treat depression.

We have all seen them: advertisements for Celexa, Zoloft, and many others. However, if we think about our parents and grandparents of the post-WWII years…

Do we really remember that they talked about being depressed? Probably not in most cases.

What is it that is making so many people depressed?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the depression epidemic, reporting that by the year 2020, at least 30% of adults will suffer from major depression at some time in their lives.

More frightening is the fact that WHO believes depression will be the second leading cause of death. It is thought that insecurity in relationships and work are major causes of depression. (Source BBC News (1999).

It is clear by reading reports that we do, in fact, have a depression epidemic, but many times depression is missed by many doctors, and, as a result, depressed people do not receive the appropriate treatment. However, it is important that physicians begin recognizing that some of the symptoms they are treating are, in fact, due to depression.

Things like aches and pains, headaches, and other non-descript ailments may be caused by depression.

The fact that WHO recognizes that some of the major causes of depression include insecurity in relationships and jobs seem to point the way to prevent depression by understanding how it comes about. However, it is not all that clear-cut.

Many types of depression are known to come from a chemical imbalance in the brain. Some people have this unbalance and some don’t. Those that have this imbalance might go along fine for years, but then some life trigger – loss of a job, loss of a relationship – or other significant negative event, will trigger the depression.

The issue then is complicated on how to prevent depression. Some holistic approaches to prevention and treatment of depression discuss the importance of nutrition and vitamins to ensure a healthy body and a healthy brain.

Other reports focus on today’s lifestyle – the incessant drive to work long hours to make more money, at the expense of family time, and the breakdown of key relationships in the family – as causes of depression. The prevention and cure in these situations would be stable family relationships and a more settled lifestyle.

Obviously, depression, like many other illnesses, can come about in different ways and has different sources. The important thing is to recognize it when it occurs in a person, treat it appropriately, and hopefully prevent those at high risk from becoming depressed.

Depression is a diagnosis that is so widespread that many may not regard it as a real illness. The fact is that depression is a disorder that can prove life-threatening if not dealt with in a timely manner.

Depression can be nothing short of debilitating, disrupting not only long-term plans and goals, but even the most everyday things in life, whether it be dragging oneself out of bed in the morning, preparing meals, and taking care of various odds and ends.

Various forms of professional treatment and medications are available, of course, but they can often be prohibitively expensive. While depression can be difficult to cure, and will not pass with time like a common cold, it can be effectively managed with the help of a few easy guidelines. For serious depression management, you may need to seek professional help; but even the layperson can take an active approach, and engage in self-treatment, having learned about ways to deal with depression.

Activity is one of the simplest methods for coping with depression. Do whatever it takes to divert your mind from those dark thoughts, to maintain healthy physical and mental activity. Find a relaxing kind of recreation or exercise, which will not only train your body, but calm your mind, and help you get more closely in touch with the real you. Getting a good night’s sleep is also crucial to mental health. If you’re having problems sleeping, even small changes to the physical arrangement of your bedroom can make a difference. Remove every distracting or annoying element from your sleeping area—anything that prevents you from falling asleep and sleeping soundly.

One of the worst things a depressed person can do is stifle his emotions, keeping them inside, hiding them from others and possibly from oneself. Be honest about what you’re feeling, and learn to discuss it openly and freely. Emotions aren’t something to fear. Some of life’s challenges can reduce us to tears, which is only natural; but some people consider this to be humiliating, and beneath their dignity, and therefore, instead of letting the sadness express itself the way nature intended, they try to smother it deep within them. There, it can simmer slowly, until, without warning, the grief and anger erupt, often with acts of pointless violence and destruction—throwing things, breaking things, or yelling angrily, and for no apparent reason, at someone you love.

Spend time with those you care about. You need to build a support network around yourself, with the people who know the real you—the you that loves life and welcomes its challenges. As mentioned above, your buddies and relatives can help distract you from your problems, or simply help you express them. Those we care about are often what bring meaning to an otherwise pointless existence; often, by focusing our attention on them, and on our love for them, instead of on ourselves, we can begin to find a way out of depression.

Finally, have some faith in yourself. Don’t pile insults and deprecations upon your own head. Depression can lead to a dangerously distorted view of oneself as weak, without talent, and incapable of living. Take a moment to reflect on your talents, on what you’ve accomplished so far in life. Direct your energy outwards, whether it’s taking up a new hobby, or doing something to make another person’s day. When you see the effect you can have on those you love, you’ll begin to realize the power you have.

When you know how to get rid of depression, you can begin to treat it practically. It’s not a quick or easy process, and will take some determination and persistence. But always remember that there are brighter days ahead.
