How Can You Deal with Change Constructively?

You’ll never learn to embrace life in all of its exhilarating fullness until you learn to accept the reality of change. Uncertainty is the stuff life is made of. Without it, life would be downright monotonous. In any case, human beings are powerless to escape change. So it’s wise to develop a more well-rounded view of transition—because, while it can be intimidating, it is also full of opportunity for those who know how to look for it.

Who ever said that changes were only for the worse? Just reflect for a moment on the transitions you’ve endured since your infancy! Placed in the proper perspective, you’ll realize just how far your life has taken you. All those uncertainties you dealt with have forged you into the person you are today.

Whether large or small, earth-shattering or miniscule, transitions are a part of our lives. Armed with just a few pointers, you can confront the uncertainty in your life with confidence.

1. Fix your sights on the opportunities changes offer.

Anyone who assumes that transitions will lead to a decrease in prosperity and happiness is being tragically shortsighted. Is your current situation really that perfect? Do you think so little of yourself, that you assume that you can’t possibly do any better? When you reject change altogether, you’re robbing yourself of great opportunities. You’re dooming yourself to stagnation. You’re admitting that life will never get any better.

The changes we go through give life its sense of excitement, both its thrills and its spills. Sure, not every change is for the best. But keep a broad perspective; don’t miss the forest for the trees. What at first appears to be negative may lead you in unexpected directions, forcing you to explore avenues that you had shut off before.

2. Keep your eyes on the prize

Set your priorities in life, and make a list of your most important goals, the ones you plan on attaining no matter what. If you stay focused on these major destinations in life, you’ll be likely to reach them, no matter what zig-zag paths you may take in the process. Remember that you might reach your goals in rather unexpected ways, if you remain persistent.

3. Don’t be so egotistical

When it comes to change, keep in mind that you’re not the center of the universe. At the same time that you’re affected by change, the decisions and actions you make can bring about changes in other people’s lives as well, for better or worse. Also, certain transitions may affect entire groups of people, in which case you’ll need to discuss it openly and find a solution together.

People react to transition differently, and at varying paces. Allow every member of your group the time they need to adapt, and always be considerate of their own feelings and thoughts.

4. Don’t dwell on what was, but look forward to what will be

Many of us tend to get stuck in various ruts in our lives. There may not be anything particularly good about our old habits, but we’re used to them, and find them somehow comforting. But the fact is that life in this day and age is changing faster than ever before, and those who cling to their old routines are likely to be left behind.

Learn to let go of those old, and possibly bad, habits. Keep in mind that there are always alternatives; know how to envision new possibilities, and greet them with excitement and a readiness to learn, instead of assuming from the start that they’ll be changes for the worse. Why get hysterical, when you can meet change constructively, and make it work to your advantage?
